Five for Friday

Oh my goodness! I am so exhausted from this week I almost didn't want to write this post. But then I told myself, I've been neglecting the blog and CAN'T miss another Five for Friday!!! So here I am!
Mainly pictures, very little words.

1. We're all about partner work here! Working together to fill out their blank United States map and learning state abbreviations at the same time.

2. Writer's Workshop is off to a good start!

3. Wednesday was Back to School Night. Another successful one under my belt! :D

Principal required us to have the kids write autobiographies and post them on our hallway bulletins for Back to School Night.

4. My first DonorsChoose project was funded! Literally minutes after I sent out an email to friends asking for donations. I have such wonderful friends!

5. First Art lesson of the school year! Reviewing our knowledge of lines and colors. Very cute result!

That's all folks! I'm exhausted and need to sleep! I think I'm getting sick! @@

I'm Still Here!

Wow, I feel like I have been absent from the blogging world for a while! Guess that's what being back in school (plus everything else that's going on in life) does to you. It's also made me miss the last two Five for Fridays. Major sadness. But maybe I can do a quick recap? :D

Last Weekend
One of my very good friends got married and I was a bridesmaid! Sure was one crazy weekend. Practically took up the entire weekend, but these two wonderful people are finally married!

In the Classroom
Launched Reader's Workshop with some sharing of our favorite books and favorite reading memories.
The students each brought their favorite book from home to share with their classmates.
My favorite reading memory.

In Science, we are learning about balance and motion. Started off our investigation with tops and creating tops! The kids loved that.

At Home
After spending 2+ weeks failing to get the cheap cardboard magazine holders at Ikea (they were always sold out!), I finally gave in and splurged on plastic book bins from Steps to Literacy. They finally arrived this week! Very excited to start using them. Also gave me a chance to finally use my circle cutter for the labels!
Circle cutter + laminator = labels for book bins!
And just to end this post with some cuteness. A cute subtraction story!

Doubles Rap

It's the doubles, baby, let's go let's go!
It's the doubles, baby, and we start with zero!

Can you guess what we did in class today? :)

If you guessed doubles, then you are correct! The awesome thing about being a first grade teacher who moved to second is that I know what was taught in first grade. Knowing that doubles was taught in first grade, I figured it would be more exciting to review doubles through music rather than through worksheets. So, the fun began!

First, I showed the kids this video of some awesome second grade teachers out there (not my school)

Then I let the kiddos listen to version of the doubles rap that I made last night.

After that, we voted on which one we wanted to learn to sing. I think the kids were trying to please me because they voted to use my version.

We sang the song at least like four times. During the fourth time, I told the kids I wanted to see if they could sing it without me and secretly whipped out my phone to record the results.

Not bad. Not bad at all kids. Hopefully you have all your doubles facts memorized now! :)

September Currently

Oh my, I've been so busy this weekend I almost forgot that a new month means new Currently! Thank goodness I decided to finally try to catch up on my blog reading and was reminded. Whew! A day late, but didn't have to miss out on the fun! :)

I wish I had time to explain every one of these but unfortunately, I have to go back to planning! However, I will leave you with a freebie, a poster I made for my Reading Workshop introduction.
